Semi-motorized fishing boats are a common sight along Kerala’s coastline, blending traditional design with mechanized propulsion. These boats enable small-scale fishers to navigate coastal waters efficiently, enhancing catch capacity while retaining manageable costs. They support livelihoods, local economies, and the supply of fresh seafood to markets. Constructed from wood with simple outboard motors, the boats exemplify a balance between tradition and technology. However, overfishing, coastal erosion, and climate change pose challenges to sustainable fishing. Promoting responsible practices, maintenance of traditional knowledge, and community-based management is crucial to preserving both the ecological and socio-economic importance of semi-motorized fishing in Kerala.
