Nungari Pradhan is the youngest sister of late Sidheswar Pradhan, a local Hindu leader from Sulesaru village in Kandhamal. During the 2008 violence, when Hindutva mobs attacked churches, homes, and people, Sidheswar publicly assured Christian residents of protection and refused to allow violence in his village. He challenged the mob, asking where the Christians would go if driven out. For this act of solidarity, he was brutally killed and burnt. His murder exposes the intolerance toward dissent within communal mobilization. Yet his stand also reveals a critical truth: wherever Hindus collectively resisted violence and defended minorities, mobs were forced to retreat.
